Musique: Statik Dancin' in Bruxelles

Music: The season of summer music festivals has officially started!

This year's Primavera Sound Festival has just started in Barcelona, until June 2nd. Its lineup includes groups/singers such as Architecture In Helsinki, Patti Smith, Hot Chip, Ivan Smagghe, Justice, Blonde Redhead, Kid Koala, Bonde Do Role, Klaxons, Shitdisco, Chromeo, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, David Carretta, Los Planetas, Spank Rock, Spiritualized, Diplo, Sr. Chinarro, Luomo, The Durutti Column, Maxïmo Park, Erol Alkan, Umek, The White Stripes, The Fall, Múm, Wilco, Fujiya & Miyagi and Nathan Fake, among others, less well known.

It has become quite mainstream and probably overtaken SONAR festival, in popularity.
But SONAR (a festival for experimental electronic music) is still alive and will come later, between 14 and 16 June, also in Barcelona.
Another famous Spanish festival is FIB, the Festival Internacional de Benicàssim in Valencia, Spain, later on, between 19-21 July 2007. It will have a quite eclectic lineup, yet very up to date, with, among others, Fangoria, Fischerspooner (yes!), Klaxons, B'52!, Nouvelle Vague, The Rapture, Sascha Funke, Simian mobile, Rufus W., Cansei de SerSexy, Vialic, Peter Von Poehl, Antony & the Johnsons and Digitalism.
.
In France there are also many many festivals, one of the best known is certainly the Eurockeennes (http://www.eurockeennes.fr) festival in Belfort, between 29 June and 1st July. It will showcase Les Rita Mitsouko, Justice, Peter Von Poehl, Simian Mobile Disco, The Hives, Queens Of The Stone Age, Phoenix, Digitalism, Maxïmo Park, I'm From Barcelona, Shitdisco, Arcade Fire, Air, TV On The Radio, Antony & the Johnsons, Laurent Garnier and Klaxons, among other groups.
.
Yet one of my favourites, if nothing for its name is the Siestes éléctroniques" festival, in Toulouse, south of France – see next post.
.
Also in Belgium there are a couple of good festivals, very crowded, despite the (usual) summer rain… Among them, Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop.
.
And Portugal too, has got its share of summer festivals, one of the biggest is the Superbock-Superrock festival in Lisbon (trend: rock), presenting Maxïmo Park, Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem, Scissor Sisters, The Rapture, Block Party, Arcade Fire, Interpol, TV on the radio, among others. The biggest festival is certainly the Festival do Sudoeste, in the southern coast of Portugal at Zambujeira do Mar, between 2 and 5 August. It invites groups like Oasis, The Streets, Mika, Bonde do Rolê, Patrick Wolf, Cassius, I'm from Barcelona, etc.
So... enjoy the summer, enjoy the music!

Music: do you know GOLDFRAPP?

...well, if you don't know GOLDFRAPP, it's about time :-)
The band consists of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and was formed in 1999. Their debut album, "Felt Mountain" (2000) was excellent (loungy melancholic with an electro touch) but failed to conquer wide public, even though it was well received. With their second CD "Black Cherry" (2003), they moved from chilled out electronica to a more 'electro-rock' or 'glam pop-rock' direction. and that's when they got more 'mainstream' and got much public and critics acclaim. Following the success of 'Black Cherry', they released a third album 'Supernature' in the summer of 2005, which would become Goldfrapp's most successful commercial release. And adding to these three albums, there are loads of remixes and remixes... and of videos. I saw them twice in Brussels, the first when they were not yet so well known and the second when they were beginning to be more commercial. Both times they were great and Allison can really put up a great show and is very cool! So I'm eagerly waiting for the follow up... maybe something more 'tech-house'?...
In the meantime, check their Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/goldfrapp
and watch some videos:

Music > I AM X

Music: Concert > IAMX

So I've just seen the concert by IAMX in Brussels as part of their "alternative tour 2007". We had to wait long, even listen to the first part by local group Piano something... IAM X came late and left early... still nearly one hour of some of their best music, well played, with passion, great voice. At moments they grabbed the audience and were effective, even though it never was extraordinary. I quite like their style and Chris' passionate melancholic voice. I AM X is the brainchild of former Sneaker Pimp’s front man Chris Corner. They have already brought out two albums, "Kiss+swallow" and "The alternative. They are something hybrid between The rapture, Cure and Placebo...
Check out their page at myspace and watch the videos of “Spit it out” and “The president” and listen to some other tracks.

Music: Scarlett & Justin episode 1

Scarlett Johansson is the cherry of the cake, starring in the new video clip of Justin Timberlake (What goes around). It seems that the clip is already a big success in the net, whereas it has not officially come out yet – it is expected to be out on March 3. But it is maybe less the quality of the song than the clip itself (and Scarlett’s presence) that explains this success... Justin and Scarlett (who are said to be having an affair, now that Scarlett has left cutie Josh) offer hot scenes in the video, which has already been seen by some 1.5 million people in Internet. There are three versions of the video, one of three minutes intended for television, this one of nine minutes available in the web and a thirty minute one which is not yet available. Vive le ‘marketing’… and Scarlett Johansson! and send Josh Hartnett to comfort him…

Music: Best of 2006

This year the "Best of" comes a bit late... yet it's never too late is it? 2006 was the year of confirmation of norwegian musician Lindstrøm and of danish Trentemøller, as well as the group The Rapture from New York, with a great second album (and a fresh live act). The year of the rediscovery and confirmation of Fujiya & Miyagi, Post Industrial Boys (from Georgia), Cat Power, Fuckpony, Nouvelle Vague, Scissor Sisters (well partly), Tiga and many others. For me it was the year of the discovery of many rising promises like Michoacan (mexican musician from US), Loco Dice (from Hamburg), MSTRKRFT (from Canada), Tekel (from France), CSS (Cansei de ser sexy) (from Brazil), Minilogue (from Sweden), Lily Allen, Delorean (from Spain), Pinkboy (from Portugal) and many others. 2006 was the year of minimal electro-house or minimal techno-house, whatever you want to call it, with flagships like Marc Romboy , Stephan Bodzin (from Systematic in Germany), Martin Buttrich, Nick Chacona, Loco Dice and Digitalism, Sasse, etc...
So here's the list and have fun looking up for it. The January-February 2007 playlist will soon be out...

Music: Mexico soundtrack

Forget Mariachis, boleros and all the music clichés about Mexico... Actually the only place I listened to Mariachis while I was in Mexico was in Playa del Carmen and of course, they were playing for tourists… but don't misundertsand me, Maricachis can be cool and quite romantic, at the right moment and mood, of course. However, unless you’ll be going for a marriage or some special party or local festivities, you’re not so likely to come across it.

The contemporary pop and electronic music scene is quite alive and creative in Mexico and is not limited to the well known Murcof, Titan and Nortec Collective (those of Tijuana sessions). Maybe it's the divine support of Macuilxochitl's kiva, Aztec god of music and dance... The soundtrack of my Mexico trip includes groups/singers like
But of course, it also includes the spanish cult-stars Fangoria or the argentinian Miranda or even the mexican singers Gloria Trevi and Paulina Rubio and Pasteles Verdes (a more pop side…) and the soundtrack from the movie Silent Hill.

All contributed to the perfect and unforgettable musical background to the images and urban trips in particular in Mexico D.F. around the “colonias” Condesa, Roma, Centro, Polanco, up and down Reforma, Chapultepec, Insurgentes, Coyacan, Santa Fé, etc. And of course muchisimas gracias a Hector for making me discover most of it.

Music: GIRL MONSTER

The triple compilation "GIRL MONSTER" is a guide through the history of cutting edge music made by women from the late 70ies to present day, featuring female heroes of the late 70ies and early 80ies like Ana da Silva, Björk and The Slits, alongside contemporary classics like Björk, Le Tigre, Peaches, Chicks On Speed, Barbara Morgenstern, Le Tigre, Sir Alice or Lesbians on ecstasy, among others. I discovered in at "Colette" in Paris, where else?...

The Triple CD compilation “GIRL MONSTER” comes from the "Chicks On Speed" Record label and celebrates the history and future of women's creative music output, to "further invent and challenge the future of music and push the boundaries of sound and pop around the world"!!! "GIRL MONSTER" is a music manifesto for the feminine cause, combining pleasure and attitude.

"GIRL MONSTER tells a rich historical story, from the original girl monsters of punk and post punk to contemporary tricksters and electro-rock pranksters… (…) But what sets the compilation apart from all the other compilations around the topic of “Women and Music” is that it is not just a collection of what everybody knows already, packaged under the misleading slogan of “Women in Rock”, instead this compilation creates a movement of its own, containing 2/3 of exclusive tracks, showcasing some of the finest (and mostly unreleased) tracks from a worldwide underground network of female musicians, even following in the tracks of some of the classics like Tina Weymouth (Tomtom Club/Talking Heads) , Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle) , Siouxsie Sioux (Siouxsie and the Banshees), or Ana Da Sliva (The Raincoats) by featuring their latest productions."

Since 1999, the group "Chicks On Speed" has had an its agenda to subvert certain conventions of the pop music world, of consumption and of the arts. New York Underground classic „Launderette“ by Vivien Goldman (with John Lydon as co-producer and Robert Wyatt on percussion !) offers one of the best moments, directly out of the 80s, while more recent promises such as "Le Tigre" and "Erase Errata" use woman condition as inspiration for their music, following a more militant approach. "Japanese Intelligence Mind Control" is another good moment and an instrumental break among a lot of shouting and loads of attitude. There are new and exclusive tracks by Chicks on Speed and Angie Reed (produced by Eric D. Clark) as well as more exclusive new tracks by the up-coming Kids on TV and Scream Club vs. Ben Adorable (feat. Peaches) along-side the smashing Client song (that features Pete Doherty).

Music: TRACKLIST October 06

Album of the month:

Trentemøller – “The last resort”
With this double cd, danish musician Anders Trentemøller walks his own path away from the pokerflat label where he started with a remix for Royksopp. The first CD is instrumental electronic music with an atmospheric and organic taste, evoluting from the previous electro-minimal Trentemøller’s work. Yet, tracks like “Polar Shift’, ‘Rykketid’ and ‘Killer Kat’ may make you feel like dancing. This reminds a bit of Nathan Fake but is less techno and more dancefloor. A great CD which is to be listened in one long go. The second CD has some remixes and different versions.
"Anders Trentemøller has taken the underground scene by storm over the last few months with such incredible tracks as 'Beta Boy', 'Polar Shift' and 'Sunstroke', not to mention his remixes of artists ranging from The Knife and Yoshimoto through to the Pet Shop Boys. He's become one of the leading producers in a considerably short space of time, and now is due to release his debut artist album 'The Last Resort' on Poker Flat. Due for release in October, and preceded by lead single 'Always Something Better', this is one to mark on the calender as it is definitely not to be missed." >>> http://www.progressive-sounds.com/features/Trentemoller-The-Last-Resort.asp

Music: 8 years of Lux

Lisbon's best club will soon celebrate 8 years of nightlife & partying. As "Footprintguides" describes it, "Excruciatingly cool Lux is the epitome of Lisbon style". Lux is a bar-lounge-club, the brainchild of Lisbon's nightlife guru (and not only, he also owns restaurant Bica do Sapato) Manuel Reis. It is also said that it is partly owned by Hollywood actor John Malkovich. In any case, if you are able to make it past the selective but cool doormen (and women) you will enjoy Lisbon's hippest club and some say one of Europe's most fashionable, having attracted visiting stars like Cameron Diaz, Prince and Madonna. It has a spacious interior decorated with funky and retro furniture - the first lounge floor has funky 1960s and 1970s furniture and plays an eclectic rock and pop mix. Downstairs, from 0200 the young fashion crowd dance to excellent music ranging from house to electro, funk & hip hop delivered by top-class DJs like Rui Vargas, Yen Sung and DJ Vibe. Best of all is the cool balcony in the lounge floor overlooking the river and the breezy cocktail terrace with beautiful views. If you have the chance, don't miss the sunrise.

Each year in November Lux throws its yearly anniversary party which is one of the best nightlife events in Lisbon, they say. Lux organises many great parties (such as New Year's party - I remember a great masks-party a couple of years ago) with great DJs and regular invites guest DJs and musicians for live sets, coming to perform from all over Europe (and beyond).

Escreve Eduardo Prado Coelho no Publico:
