Forget the earphones iPod delivers when you buy their mp3 players... forget also those from Creative, Philips, Sony etc... even Sennheiser. Unless you want to walk around with those big things that cover your ears, of course. And even in that case, it's not sure you'll get a better sound...
The best in-ear compact earphones are those from Ultimate Ears or Shure or Westone... I use the UE Super.fi 5EB which have a special bass... but i've tried the Super.fi 5Pro and they are better. Both these better than the Shure ones. I've never tried the Westone, but I trust this site, they're good and efficient! Check for yourself:
